I Am America! NOT!

What is “America?”

A person? A race? A party? An idea?

i-am-america

For decades, leftists have redefined “American” into something else.

Reactions to Trump’s inaugural address reflect the disparate views of America: globalist vs. nationalist; American Exceptionalism vs. Ugly American.

Remember Obama’s apology presidency? He continually found fault with America and courted anti-American nations and tyrants.

The Alt-Right’s WASP America

But first, let’s address the Alt-Right and its identification as WASP.

The Alt-Right views real America as a race. Ann Coulter exemplifies that view. Coulter has asserted, “Most of us have a lot of British ancestry. … of course our two countries are very similar in culture, I mean, down to the genes.” (For years, Coulter has entertained the notion of WASP superiority – at a genetic level.)

While the Left embraces illegals and foreigners as “Americans,” Coulter and the Alt-Right contend that only WASPs descended from colonists are “true” Americans.

Indeed, Coulter sees Americanness as not only a race, but envisions it as a personherself. Coulter boasts “I’m a settler” and a “Native American.” Coulter cherishes her Pilgrim roots, making her a self-identified authority on all things American as well as moral, culturally, and genetically superior to the rest of us mere mortals.

Leftists tend to reject nationalism (and, thus, Americanism) in favor of a globalist, citizens of the world, paradigm. They look askance at patriotism, dismiss concerns for border control and enforcement of immigration laws, and reject the idea of American exceptionalism and the privilege of American citizenship.

In contrast, the Alt-Right holds a very constrictive, nativist view of citizenship.

The Left’s America

For the Left, America is a party as much as it is anything else. The “Women’s March on Washington” was a potpourri of far-left causes and ideologies – all to affirm that they are the real America.

The appropriately named actress America Ferrera inaugurated that anti-Trump event by claiming, “The president is not America. His Cabinet is not America. Congress is not America. We are America, and we are here to stay.”

“We are America” – the “We” being those Leftists who were sufficiently Left to be included in the protest.

As noted by National Review, “While no one claims that the president, his Cabinet, and Congress are in fact, ‘America,’ the president and the Congress (which includes many progressives presumably more congenial to Ferrera’s world view) are duly elected officials, chosen in accordance with our constitutional system. In that sense, they do represent ‘America’ – in the only way that counts in our democratic republic.”

But the Left’s America is, as Dennis Prager notes, “essentially a racist, xenophobic, colonialist, imperialist, war-mongering, money-worshipping, moronically religious nation.”

Cultural Zeitgeist

Benjamin Weingarten, at Conservative Review, asked a series of questions which “speak to a fundamental cultural divide” in American. “How one answers reflects a certain cultural zeitgeist.” Weingarten suggests Trump’s platform “cut across party lines” to answer “some basic questions:”

“Do Americans believe in strength or weakness?”

“Do Americans believe in law and order or license and disorder?”

“Do Americans believe in brash politically incorrect candor or genteel political-speak?”

“Do Americans believe that their well-being is primary, or of secondary importance to the well-being of those of other nations?”

“Do Americans believe that America is the exceptional, indispensable nation, or conversely that it is the unique source of all that is ill in the world?”

Weingarten observed that “conservative policies serve populist ends because conservative policies are about protecting the littlest of “’little guys,’ the individual: His life, his liberty and his pursuit of happiness. Conservatism is about treating everyone equally under the law, ensuring an even playing field for all rather than conferring on individuals, groups or enterprises special benefits and privileges. Conservatism is about what is doing best for all Americans by holding as preeminent individual liberty and private property rights, thereby fostering a vibrant and dynamic culture and economy, and protecting our fundamental rights by way of an impartial justice system and a dominant defense.”

Real Americans

However, the Left would almost uniformly answer Weingarten’s questions choosing the second option – whichever choice accrued to America’s detriment or diminishing of stature and power.

Dismissing American exceptionalism and discrediting America’s Founding Fathers, progressives now champion a new countercultural figure: A female Muslim as representative of America.

An anti-Trump “We the People” campaign produced posters depicting “protagonist” groups “identified as vulnerable in the present political climate – Muslims, Latinos, African-Americans, and LGBTQ people among them – using the tropes of patriotic American campaign posters.” A spokesperson claimed, “Our America is one of equal humanity that does not demean or discriminate.”

1364

Moreover, “These ideas are not partisan. They are the foundation of America, and on inauguration day, with your help, we will make sure everyone remembers them.”

Their campaign expressly excludes the mainstream, Christians, and Western Europeans. The countercultural 1960s are alive and well in the 2010s.

Contrary to their assertions, these propagandistic posters are purely partisan and further an expansive redefinition of what it means to be an American. As for the equality of all mankind, well …

Sharia Law

Linda Sarsour, one of the Women’s March organizers, wants sharia law in America. Sharia law is contrary to the Constitution, the supreme law of the land. It is contrary to the Declaration’s proclamation of the inalienable rights of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” It is contrary to America’s roots and ideals and everything which makes America America.

c2zdxdguuaaljws-jpg-large

Sarsour, a self-proclaimed, “racial justice and civil rights activist,” attacked freedom fighter Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who “was forced to suffer female genital mutilation when she was five years old in Somalia,” tweeting “Brigitte Gabriel=Ayaan Hirsi Ali. She’s asking 4 an a$$ whippin’. I wish I could take their vaginas away – they don’t deserve to be women.”

Nice. American.

c3hshchwcaaqgxz

Sarsour also tweeted, “Nothing is creepier than Zionism.”

American?

Contrary to Barack Obama’s assertion that Islam was part of the fabric of America at her founding, it wasn’t. Sharia is hostile to the freedoms proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence and enshrined in the Constitution.

What leftists offer is the antithesis of the American ethos.

America – an Idea

Both the Alt-Right and the Far Left dismiss the notion that America is an idea when, in fact, America was birthed by an idea enshrined in the Declaration of Independence.

The idea – freedom – is at the heart of the American Dream. That idea encompasses the biblical understanding that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights.”

Our forefathers – whether genetically or ideologically – took a virgin continent to create a New World. Not like Hitler’s Fatherland or Stalin’s Mother Russia. Theirs was not a blood and soil philosophy, but one which built upon the collected wisdom of Western Civilization, the principles and precepts of the Bible, and the surety of God’s Providence.

The Framers of our Constitution and Founders of our Republic created a nation and a government which maximized political, economic, and religious liberty to an extent never before seen.

America’s Founders believed in the idea of liberty and equality – not race! Abraham Lincoln eloquently spoke of the “proposition that all men are created equal.” A proposition is an idea or an ideal, not a race!

Racial Madness

Four blacks kidnapped and tortured a white mentally-challenged man while using “terrible racist statements.” (Torture streamed on Facebook Live!)

racial-madness

The Washington Post suggested it was inconsequential. CNN called it a “hazing.” One CNN panelist actually blamed Trump! NBC argued the thugs were not “truly trying to be criminal.” (Imagine saying that about the abominable Dylann Roof.)

The Chicago police refused to call it a hate crime. When is a hate crime not a hate crime? When its committed by blacks against a white male.

In related news, a university professor tweeted “All I Want for Christmas is White Genocide.” This professor remains employed.

Racial Healing Aborted

Barack Obama promised racial healing in America and racial tensions reached new heights under his presidency.

Despite Obama winning the presidency twice in a majority white nation, the racial grievance industry took control of the national debate. (No, not the KKK; the BLM.)

Phony Black Lives Matter narratives filled the airwaves, Internet, and social media.

Enslaved and energized by identity politics – and rejecting the promises and realities of Martin Luther King’s famous dream – the Black Lives Matter movement employed a range of racial myths to create a constituency and gain power and prestige. (Let’s not forget the money.)

quote-abraham-lincoln-freed-the-black-man-in-many-ways-dr-king-freed-the-white-man-how-did-ronald-reagan-137-80-36

Some of these narratives (e.g., “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot”) have been proven totally false, yet they retain a visceral power which overwhelms reason and reality.

From Ferguson to Baltimore and across the nation, Black Lives Matter propaganda has destroyed communities and created chaos.

Riots are called “protests.” Murder is deemed “social justice.”

Root Causes

So-called “white privilege” is the latest bogeyman. But blacks are not victims of a fictitious “institutionalized white racism” or presumed “white privilege.”

Rather, some blacks are victims of a fifty-year-old War on Poverty and a welfare state which has become the new plantation – created by Democrats who treat them as children. The paternalistic state gone awry.

The welfare statenot white racism – has created generational poverty, generational broken homes, and a cultural of dependency justified by allegations that blacks are victims of white racism and the legacy of slavery.

Consequently, perceiving themselves to be victims, many feel entitled to whatever they can get from the government, becoming dependent upon that government. With it, comes rage against the injustices they perceive have been perpetrated against them. And with that comes a culture of irresponsibility.

quote-white-liberals-are-the-most-racist-people-there-are-because-they-put-blacks-in-a-box-benjamin-carson-93-91-53

David French observes, “When you celebrate thugs, you get more thugs.” He laments a “depraved culture” and “breakdown in law and order.”

French concludes: “Our nation’s social fabric is fraying — nowhere more than in Chicago. This is the Left’s city, a foundation of its national power. How many more people have to die before it changes course?”

Contemporary dysfunctional black communities are not rooted in America’s founding. Rather, one need only look to Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society and subsequent iterations of the welfare state and the adoption of progressive policies and political correctness to see the development and escalation of dysfunctional pathologies in some black (and a growing number of white) communities.

America No Longer Needs to Apologize for Slavery

My MSNBC Op-Ed (7/2/97), entitled, “America has acknowledged mistakes,” is as relevant today as it was twenty years ago. Here it is:

Kimberle Crenshaw writes about passionate “white opposition” to a formal apology for slavery (neglecting to mention the many blacks who oppose it as well). While citing their objections (in her terms: “personal denial,” “finger pointing,” “traditional historicizing,” and “new-age globalizing”), she fails to refute any of those arguments. She doesn’t even try.

Instead, Crenshaw questions the motives of those opposed to an apology, saying it “reflects a deep unwillingness to desegregate American history and to integrate American self-identity.” Self-flagellation is not my self-identity.

Crenshaw contrasts post-slave, post-apartheid societies with non-slave, non-apartheid ones, failing to note that all societies are at least post-slave and, even today, many societies remain slave societies. (Why is the Left always willing to condemn America but praise our enemies?)

Crenshaw accuses the right of explaining away the black underclass as a result of “inherent characteristics.” Wrong! The right recognizes that the welfare state promotes self-destructive behaviors and the underclass is enslaved to the welfare state. Let’s forget apologies and free the underclass.

Crenshaw desires “historical closure.” Most Americans have experienced “closure” with past slavery. Constantly tearing at the scab only causes the wound to bleed.

Par for the course, Crenshaw criticizes America’s Founding Fathers for expressing the ideals of liberty for all while condoning slavery. No one disputes the divergence of these ideals and their implementation.

Crenshaw insists that whites – and American culture itself – are in a state of denial about slavery (and other historical atrocities). Denial? Our cultural elites positively revel in past American misdeeds (while glossing over our triumphs and glories).

Is Crenshaw really suggesting that Americans are denying historical slavery? Is she subtly suggesting a moral equivalence between this perceived denial and those who deny the Holocaust?

Tragically, while her ancestors may have been enslaved in chains, Crenshaw (and others) have enslaved themselves to the past. She desires “a reopening of American historical memory,” as if anyone could “forget” American slavery. She wants an acknowledgement of America’s “tragic mistakes” but Americans have already acknowledged them.

We are fast approaching a new millennium. Isn’t it time to put the past behind us, to let the wounds heal, to live for the future? Until we do, this schizophrenic identity crisis will only exacerbate the already tumultuous times we are living in.

7 Stages of Trump Recovery

Some worshippers called Donald Trump the Savior of America and of civilization itself.[1] They believed Trump could save the nation from the Establishment[2] and statism[3] which it promotes.

7 Stages of Trump Recovery

Instead, Trump has only sacrificed them on the cross of his own ego.

Trump was never – and never could have been – their or our Savior. Trump has always been a part of the Establishment his followers detest. His entire life is one of self-interest and self-aggrandizement fueled by an unrelenting narcissism.

Yet many who believed in him did so because of, not in spite of, his delusions of grandeur. They were looking for a strong man to save the Republic and, instead, nominated a bully[4] and would-be tyrant.[5]

From the beginning, Trump was destined to lose.[6] A liberal posing as a conservative and running as a Republican could never win against a liberal (or even a socialist) running as a Democrat.[7]

Despite Trump’s daily lies and reversals of policy positions,[8] his support surged among the faithful. Even when it was obvious that Trump was mentally unhinged,[9] his followers persisted. Even though Trump’s core “principles” became “flexible” and “negotiable,”[10] they insisted that Trump would do what they want him to do.

When Trump loses – and he will lose – Trump worshippers will have to reconcile themselves to reality. Some won’t. Some are as obstinate and bullying as Trump. Narcissists don’t know how to repent or how to admit error.

For those who are capable of facing reality and being held accountable, this handy outline was designed just for you:

#NeverTrump has proven itself faithful to the core principles upon which America was founded, the very principles espoused and defended by Ted Cruz.[11]

In contrast, #ForeverTrump forever owes a debt to America.

In the end, we will all have to live with the end of the American Experiment.[12]

Left Topsy-Turvy on American Revolution and Brexit

As America celebrates another birthday and the British people celebrated their Brexit vote for freedom from tyranny to a supranational bureaucracy, the heart and soul of the American Left again exposed itself as statist and globalist.

American Revolution & Brexit

Exhibit A: Steve Pincus. His recent Washington Post article attempts to paint Brexit supporters and the Republican Party as racist, anti-American xenophobes. In his introductory and subsequent paragraphs, Pincus inextricably links pro-Brexit forces with the agenda and sentiments of American conservatives and Pincus finds them wanting.

His headline asserts, “No, Brexit was not Britain’s ‘Declaration of Independence.’ It was the exact opposite.” Pincus couldn’t be more wrong.

His subheading: “The American founders would revile the pro-‘leave’ camp.” Again, his conclusion is contrary to everything we know about the Founding Fathers.

Nevertheless, Pincus contends, “But they’ve got America’s founding document exactly backward. The original American patriots would be horrified to hear their opus invoked in the service of Brexit.”

Pincus makes two striking, and strikingly wrong, claims.

Open vs. Controlled Borders

Pincus’ first strikingly wrong claim is that our Founders and the Framers of our Constitution, favored open borders. Pincus claims, “The founders called for a government that would allow for free movement of goods and peoples.”

Actually, American colonists sought control over their own borders. They vehemently opposed a power across the Atlantic Ocean determining their fate and enacting laws without their consent and contrary to their wishes.

Pincus cites the Declaration: “He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.”

No “open borders” here. What did the Founders actually seek? How do we interpret that portion of the Declaration? By what the Founders did. As noted by Heritage Foundation (emphasis added):

“Congress passed the first ‘uniform Rule of Naturalization’ under the new Constitution in March 1790. It allowed ‘any alien, being a free white person’ and ‘of good character’ who had resided in the United States for two years to become a ‘citizen of the United States’ by taking an oath in court ‘to support the constitution of the United States.’”

The very first Congress actually limited and circumscribed immigration by a clear set of criteria, looking for emigres from the Northwestern European nations which had settled America.

Heritage continues (emphasis added): “Key criteria for citizenship of the Naturalization Act of 1795 remain part of American law. These include (1) five years of (lawful) residence within the United States; (2) a ‘good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the United States’; (3) the taking of a formal oath to support the Constitution and to renounce any foreign allegiance; and (4) the renunciation of any hereditary titles.”

In contrast to the Founders’ wishes and the law of the land, today illegal aliens celebrate their Mexican holidays while burning the American flag and promoting the overthrow of the American government. Our Founders would have put a stop to this.

Activist vs. Limited Government

Pincus’ second strikingly wrong claim is that our Founders and the Framers of our Constitution favored an activist government. (Hence the subtitle of his new book.[1])

According to Pincus, “America’s founders celebrated the creative potential of the state to promote the general welfare and happiness of the people; they wanted an activist government – one that would intervene in the economy to promote growth.”

To buttress his claim, Pincus cites the Second Continental Congress: “Government was instituted to promote the welfare of mankind, and ought to be administered for the attainment of that end.”

But what did the crafters of our Republic actually mean by “welfare?” The Founders sought to promote the “general welfare and happiness of the people” by securing liberty! They understood that a free people – being secured in their liberty and able to use their God-given gifts as they deemed best – could, in today’s parlance, “maximize their potential,” strengthen their local communities, and improve the general welfare of the nation.

Our Founding Fathers fought for freedom and limited government to preserve that freedom.

Pincus clearly regards FDR’s “Second Bill of Rights” as superior to, and countermanding, our Founders’ original Bill of Rights. FDR’s progressive economic bill of rights seeks equality of outcome through government force while the Framers of our Constitution, with their political bill of rights, sought to maximize freedom and, thus, equality of opportunity.

Progressives like Pincus agree with President Obama’s assessment that America is fundamentally flawed[2] and, therefore, needs to be fundamentally transformed.[3] The Founders, Framers, and generations of Americans heartily disagree.[4] Middle America seeks to reclaim its heritage,[5] one built upon a Judeo-Christian ethos[6] which cherished liberty.

Similarly, progressives like Pincus, the Obamas, and the Clintons seek to eviscerate nationalism and elevate supranational and global institutions. In doing so, they willfully dismiss, like willing dupes,[7] the nexus between the immigration and terrorism crises.[8]

Progressives follow Hillary Clinton’s It Takes a Village (i.e., big government) when our great nation was founded on the premise that the primary duty of government is the protection of the People at home (law enforcement) and abroad (national defense) – and from government itself (Constitution).

Nationalism vs. Supra-nationalism

At heart, America as a Nation and a People matters little to these progressives who prefer to use American power and ideals against her in pursuit of their own globalist utopian goals.

Pincus equates “English First” pro-Brexit voters with the resurgence of contemporary America Firsters inspired by Donald Trump. To some degree he is correct, yet he regards that as a bad thing.

The heart and core of the Brexit Vote was to liberate the British people from the bureaucratic behemoth of the European Union’s usurpation of national sovereignty[9] and abrogation of the will of the People. Similarly, Middle America seeks its own independence from a draconian federal government[10] which serves its own needs and purposes while thwarting those whom they purportedly serve.

But Pincus again twists the historical record, asserting that late 18th-century Britons wanted the American colonists (legal settlers all) to pay their “fair share,” likening them to illegal aliens in America, today.

In reality, the American colonists – who were all self-supporting and obviously did not rely on a non-existent welfare state for survival – disagreed with the Mother Country and insisted upon, “No taxation without representation.” Our forefathers, like us, preferred a free market system without undue taxation and regulation, the very things Pincus and his lot pursue.

In his tract (and presumably in his forthcoming book as well), Pincus skirts this crucial reality: the majority of the colonists came from Britain and shared legal, linguistic, political, social, cultural, and spiritual similarities with the British realm.

Those brave men and women who gave birth to this great nation were brothers and sisters by blood who forged a new nation by creed. That creed – “all men are created equal” and “endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights” – is central to our identity as Americans.

Individual rights, not collective rights; equality of opportunity, not of outcome; reverence for God, not for the State.

As Americans, we should celebrate the greatness of America as achieved by the Providence of God through the wisdom of the Founders and we should strive to return to our roots, to restore that vision of “government of the People, by the People, and for the People,” eschewing the liberty-denying statism of the Progressive vision.

Let us reinvigorate the American experiment that it may not perish from the earth.

God bless America!

The Conservative Declaration

Please join BrotherWatch in support of Heritage Foundation’s “The Conservative Declaration.”

As of this writing, 112,817 have signed “The Conservative Declaration.”

Conservative Declaration

Heritage Foundation urges American citizens to:

Stand with your fellow patriots for freedom, religious liberty, and free enterprise. Stand up for your belief that these unalienable rights serve as the cornerstone of our great nation.

PREAMBLE

More than two centuries ago, one declaration changed the world

  • A group of brave individuals declared that all people are fundamentally equal—equally born with rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
  • They declared that government exists for one reason — to secure these God-given rights, deriving its powers from the consent of the people it governs.

The result? The founding of the United States of America.

But now America is under siege by radicals whose mission is to slowly and deliberately dismantle the principles of that original declaration. With over-reaching regulation, out-of-control spending, high deficits, and a weakened national defense, the government is the master. The consent of the people is ignored. America is looking less and less like the America of our Founding Fathers.

This must be stopped.

Conservatives must come together to stand for the principles on which our nation was founded and proclaim in unison our commitment to the ideals that our Founders proclaimed more than two centuries ago. The time has come for a new declaration to change the world.

THE CONSERVATIVE DECLARATION

We believe in the spirit of our Founding Fathers and come together from across the nation to sign the following Declaration,, reaffirming our belief in the principles on which our nation was founded. We sign as individual citizens, united in our belief that our nation was established as a constitutional republic in which the power of government is limited under the rule of law, securing liberty and justice for all.

1. CERTAIN UNALIENABLE RIGHTS

We believe this nation is uniquely dedicated to the universal principles of human liberty: that all are fundamentally equal and equally endowed with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Americans are necessarily equal and self-governing citizens, and the U.S. government is established to secure those fundamental rights. With a limited government, we have the liberty and opportunity to live our lives, control our fates, and pursue our own happiness.

2. PRIVATE PROPERTY

We believe in the right to the rewards of our own labor—the promise that we Americans can keep what we earn and that this makes possible a society in which every member can work hard, pursue opportunity, and advance in life based on individual talent and ability. In this America, success comes from hard work and personal merit rather than from entitlement or aristocracy.

3. FREE ENTERPRISE

We believe that the primary duties of the federal government in regard to the economy are to guarantee the equal rights of the individual, destroy barriers to opportunity, and uphold the rule of law. Because economic opportunity will be available to everyone, the people will have great incentive to earn more, save more, and invest in more opportunities for the future. This means more enterprise and more economic activity.

Rather than acting to guarantee economic outcomes, government should provide the sturdy framework for opportunity, economic growth, and human flourishing. It should remove unfair obstacles to economic markets, break down the artificial government structures that prevent competition, and otherwise keep tax rates low, reduce government spending, and prevent the over-regulation of private enterprise.

4. COMMON DEFENSE

We believe it is the constitutional duty of the federal government to secure the country’s international borders, preserve and protect its territorial integrity, and strengthen and preserve its constitutional government. This promotes the long-term prosperity and well-being of the American people. This means that the United States must be able, willing, and prepared at all times to defend itself, its people, and its institutions from conventional and unconventional threats to its vital interests, both at home and abroad.

But liberty does not belong only to this country. The United States must also continue to recognize its special responsibility to support the cause of liberty in the world.

5. RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

We understand and support the unique and important role of religious freedom as the cornerstone of our constitutional freedoms. The ability to freely worship and to act in accordance with a particular faith without fear of government reprisal is essential to civil society. Religious freedom protects our ability to live according to our deepest beliefs. It means we don’t have to hide who we are and what we stand for. It’s a freedom recognized as essential by the Founding Fathers and defended by policymakers, citizens, and religious leaders alike.

However, over-reaching government and a growing disregard for the role of faith in public life have led to increasing erosions of religious liberty. Together we stand in defiance of any edict that compels our institutions to participate in any act that impedes our ability to freely worship or to act in accordance with a particular faith without fear of government reprisal.

6. LIMITED GOVERNMENT

We emphatically reject today’s welfare and regulatory state. “We the people” demand less of our federal government rather than more. We commit ourselves as a nation to the principles and policies of a limited federal government and to the recovery of our Founders’ vision of a government that secures our rights. We insist that for government to play its proper role, it must be properly limited in its role.

Government must perform its proper responsibilities effectively through the three distinct branches of federal government, through all 50 states and through thousands of counties and local municipalities. We demand that the government recognize the clear constitutional limits to its powers.

[Signatories agree with the preceding.]

As individuals, we sign our names in full support of the above principles.

Together, we represent a unified front to support America’s foundational ideals. We reject the progressive efforts to dismantle our nation’s foundations and will work tirelessly for the restoration of our constitutional republic.

Burning Down Your Own House

David French’s headline is prescient: “‘Burn It All Down’ Is Not the Answer, Trump Fans.”

Have Americans lost the American spirit? Have Christians forsaken their faith? Have Conservatives abandoned their principles?

Burning Down Own House

In his column, French pointed out the obvious – at least obvious to those whose reason has not been replaced by irrational anger: It is far easier to destroy than to build. America’s Founders built America. The American experience is one of building and creating, not burning and destroying.

A strikingly high percentage of even evangelical voters are siding with Trump, not because they approve of his policies or his character, but out of pique at both political parties.

But is destroying the GOP without a replacement truly Christian, Conservative, or American?

French observes (emphasis added):

“As the evidence mounts that Trump isn’t exactly channeling justifiable conservative (or even populist) anger for constructive ends, Trump’s fans have found themselves reduced to a single argument in his defense: Even if he’s wrong on substance and they reject his personal values, at least he’ll ‘burn it all down.’ He’ll wreck the broken system and destroy a failed party.

But French does the unthinkable! He actually resorts to history, logic, and principles!

French responds to this destructive ethos pervading American culture and politics, writing, “Yet it’s hard to think of an answer more antithetical to the spirit of the American Revolution and our Constitution than ‘burn it all down.’” French notes that the American colonists, Founding Fathers, and Framers of the Constitution faced “a crisis far graver than the crises we face today,” and, instead of pursuing destructive goals, built a great nation.

French warns, “The torch and pitchfork, meanwhile, are instruments of the French revolutionary, of the nihilist who lives only to take revenge on his enemies, with a will to power but no interest in justice.” He adds, “’burn, baby, burn’ is the language of the Left.”

Plato referred to this as “canvas cleansing” with the idea being to destroy everything and then create a utopia from scratch. (It never works. Ask the victims of any socialist regime in history.)

The vapidity of Trump supporters who seek to bring down the Republican Old Guard is countered by French with lucidity (emphasis added):

“Replace men who surrender to Planned Parenthood with a man who embraces Planned Parenthood? Replace men who supported a path to legalization with a man who supports amnesty? Replace men who failed to stop Obamacare with a man who embraces single-payer health care? Nominate a man who believes in Iraq War conspiracy theories to confront the party that spawned those theories? Meet the new boss. He’ll be the same as the old.”

French cautions (emphasis added), “An American revolution isn’t a temper tantrum. It’s hard work. It’s anger channeled into virtue. Trump represents anger stripped of virtue. He will burn the GOP, but what will he build in its place?

Trump’s ascent – in a nation which opposes his New York values and desires people of character and integrity – is shocking!

We must eschew the “torch and pitchfork” and, instead, have faith in our principles and our God, championing people of character and integrity who love God, love our Country, and love the Constitution!

Trump’s Path to Defeat

Ted Cruz[1] trounced Donald “I Am A Winner” Trump in Iowa last night. Even Marco Rubio almost routed Trump. The Donald’s inevitability and invincibility proved to be ephemeral narratives. (Donald and Hillary are oh so similar!)[2]

Defeat

It is easy to see Trump’s path to defeat: Iowa – loss to Cruz (and, almost, Rubio); New Hampshire – loss to Rubio (or, perhaps, Cruz); South Carolina – loss to Cruz.(or, perhaps, Rubio); Nevada – loss to Cruz (or, perhaps, Rubio).

What kind of bounces will Cruz and Rubio get from their yuuge victories over Trump in Iowa? (Rubio had a massive expectations victory over the vainglorious Trump.)

How will Trump’s ego-bursting defeat in Iowa change his campaign and message? He will necessarily attack Rubio to court the moderate vote in New Hampshire. (But Cruz still poses a distinct threat to his ascendancy to the throne, er, presidency. A strong showing by Cruz in the “Live Free or Die” State will strike fear in Trump’s heart.)

Trump’s unfamiliarity with Christian beliefs and practices will augur ill in South Carolina.

Even Nevada can become problematic for the “I Am A Winner” candidate if his inevitable victories turn into disastrous defeats.

Will Trump still try to bully his way into the Oval Office?[3] (Can a leopard change its spots?)

We can expect Trump to push the bogus birther hoax[4] whenever he feels threatened by Cruz.

Will Trump supplement his own “hope and change[5] message with specific policy positions? Can he, at this late stage, prove his conservative credentials?[6] Appealing to patriotism is not enough.[7] An understanding of America’s history, our Constitution, our Christian heritage,[8] and the world around us is essential. These Trump lacks.

Trump is only the latest billionaire trying to buy himself into the White House, but the American people are far too smart for him.

How to Talk to a Bully (if you must)

The Donald (Trump, that is) is at it again. This time he plays the victim of a Vast Right-Wing Establishment Conspiracy. (What other traits does he share with Hillary?[1])

Bully

Someone should tell Trump that exhibiting a persecution complex[2] is not particularly appealing for a presidential candidate.

Piqued at sarcasm and hyperbole from Fox News, which so humorously lampooned Trump’s self-evident habit of demonizing his foes (always in a yuuuge way!), Trump revealed just how thin-skinned he really is.

Even his staunchest ally, Ann Coulter, has proven that she is little more than a humorless ideologue. Coulter’s forte is her lightning-quick wit, which balances Trump’s more thundering and blunt-force-trauma brand of humor.

But Coulter, who has perfected the Orwellian technique[3] of carpet-bombing “enemies of the moment,” often with hyperbole and sarcasm, now seems oblivious to the very types of rhetoric which she employs so effortlessly.

Fox News Press Release

What prompted such fear and loathing from Trump and his surrogates?

Fox News issued this press release:

“We learned from a secret back channel that the Ayatollah and Putin both intend to treat Donald Trump unfairly when they meet with him if he becomes president – a nefarious source tells us that Trump has his own secret plan to replace the Cabinet with his Twitter followers to see if he should even go to those meetings.”

What was Coulter’s response to “the press release an allegedly professional news organization?”

“So when Fox issued a smart-ass press release yesterday, Trump walked. He decided to do a charity event for veterans instead – which will have a lot more viewers than any debate sans Trump.”[4]

Chiding Fox for “such a sophomoric attack” in its “trivial and self-important press release,” the queen of snippy soundbites decries its “snippy press release.”

Speaking on MSNBC, Coulter complained about this “shocking” press release, claiming, “monopolies can get arrogant and there does seem to be a little bit of arrogance here.[5]

Talking to a Bully

Speaking of arrogance (which Coulter and Trump have in spades!), when did narcissism become a virtue? Or brash pomposity? Why do we listen to nattering narcissists and blustering blowhards?[6]

Humility is a trait neither Trump nor Coulter possess. Both refuse to “back down” under any circumstances. Both have proudly claimed they have no need of repentance. Both demonize their foes. And both claim to be victims in the aftermath of their own self-generated controversies.

Coulter has claimed to blindly worship her Savior, Donald Trump,[7] and continually extols his courage, love of country, and sense of humor. But Fox’s humor-laden press release is not funny? Perhaps it hit too close to the mark!

Fox News was spot on! If Trump can’t debate conservatives in a conservative-friendly foreign, how can he stand up to tyrants and terrorists at home and abroad? Trump can dish it out but he can’t take it.

The “allegedly professional news organization,” as Coulter put it, said nothing more controversial than Trump has been saying since he announced his candidacy. Trump’s words (like Coulter’s) are designed to provoke. They are provocative for provocation’s sake (and to generate publicity).

Still, Coulter constantly defends herself and Trump, claiming their most outrageous remarks are “just jokes.” For Coulter and Trump, calling people “bimbos” is standard fare.[8]

Mockery is the best way to talk to a bully![9]

Trump – Phony Candidate!

Neither Coulter nor Trump are above lying to achieve their goals: the bogus birther charge is exhibit one.[10]

Trump and Coulter believe that sheer will to powerdevoid of conservative principles – will lead to their victory and America’s salvation. Hubris saves[11] (in their minds)! But America can ill afford yet another big government, crony capitalist RINO.[12]

Coulter credits herself with giving Trump his message[13] and views herself as the Harriet Beecher Stowe to Trump’s Lincoln.[14] But Trump is no Lincoln (or Reagan) and Coulter is no Stowe.

Trump has proven his aversion to Christian character, conduct, and creed. His authoritarian nature, pronouncements, and promises seem devoid of deference to the Constitution that he would have to swear to uphold. (Isn’t one Obama enough?)

Trump’s flawed financial background (how many bankruptcies?) and New York (liberal social and fiscal) Values should give pause to any conservative contemplating a Trump presidency. He is a political opportunist adept at self-promotion.

At best, Trump’s Christian, conservative, and constitutionalist credentials are sparse. Very sparse indeed.

Trump has nothing in common with the Great Emancipator or the Great Communicator.[15] There is no there, there. Accomplished hucksters need not apply!

Update: After his ignominious defeat in Iowa, a chagrined Trump blamed the Iowa voters for his abysmal performance.

Compromise is Defeat

Americans are almost literally up in arms over the radical transformation of America into something she was never intended to be – and the GOP compromises with those spearheading that transformation!

The GOP leadership rails against Obama’s appeasement of terrorists, tyrants, and criminals, yet that very same leadership capitulate to the Left and the media (redundancy alert).

Compromise

At the very moment of victory in 2014, Senate Majority Leadership Mitch McConnell conceded defeat. McConnell pledged to forego any government shutdowns. That’s right: Conservatives won, so McConnell started throwing down our weapons.

The Iranian Nuclear Arms Treaty (in everything but name) should never have passed. The Senate should have insisted that this treaty go through the normal treaty process. Instead, succumbing to political expediency, RINOs in the Senate shirked their constitutional duties and enabled the worst deal in American history to give our enemies the upper hand.

Planned Parenthood should have been defunded. The American people were utterly disgusted (by vast majorities) with the barbaric atrocities taking place in Planned Parenthood facilities across the nation. Investigative videos are still be released to the public and are all available online. Boehner and McConnell failed to seize the moment – this unique moment in history – to cripple the industry which epitomizes the Holocaust of our times in our nation.

The recent two-year budget deal also conceded defeat to Obama and his left-wing agenda. Utter capitulation.

The Spirit is willing, but the Senate is weak. Far too many Republicans are willing to go along to get along.

Moreover, those self-same representatives of the People actively oppose those who are actually doing the work of the People. The Quislings in our midst treat the patriots – who are defending the Constitution and who are in alignment with the will of the People – as if they were the enemy.

Like Patrick Henry, Ted Cruz is unwelcome by those who have aligned themselves with the status quo. The Resistance is always hated by the Establishment.

Mitt Romney, the Republican standard-bearer in 2012, recently lamented the very existence of conservative talk radio and right-wing blogs because they make it harder to forge friendships with our adversaries to get things done in Washington.

Romney and his cohorts believe that “getting things done” means enacting laws and growing the government. Stopping bad laws is at least as important as enacting good laws. (Don’t we already have enough laws?)

Our Founding Fathers would be horrified to see the lack of vision and grit within the ranks of the so-called conservative leadership. Ronald Reagan had both vision and grit.

Reagan spoke in bold terms, clearly distinguishing himself from his opponents. He forthrightly stated that government was the problem. He clearly expressed his love of America and her people, extolled American exceptionalism, and championed what America could accomplish.

Reagan denounced and defeated the Evil Empire when none thought that possible. Reagan reignited the free market and restored the American military, often in opposition to those on his own team. He did so with a deep grasp of our nation’s history, Constitution, People, and destiny.

Moreover, Reagan routinely made his case to the People. He connected with them in a powerful and personal way. He made his ideas (which were distinctly American in nature) easy to understand and support. His courage and optimism won the day and it was Morning in America once again.

Not so with today’s GOP leadership. Few of our elected leaders have either the vision or the courage to do what the American people elected them to do (or what Reagan would choose to do). What would Ronald Reagan do?

Stand Up and Fight!

In search of Big Brother – Part 1

In search of Big Brother (to restore sanity to an insane world)

Part 1 – Trends to Tyranny

In October 1996, I wrote, “The world is going crazy, and we can’t stop it or get off. Instead, many seek a Superman to set it right. But will our Clark Kent save us, or enslave us?”

Since then, things have gotten far, far worse.

BB01

Nearly two decades ago, I wrote, “We are living in the midst of an age of transformation unlike that of any other, an age of incredible opportunities and growth coupled with unimaginable horror. Global changes are occurring before our very eyes, life-transforming changes which impact everyone who reads this. What does the future hold in store for us? There are many visions of the future. Not being a prognosticator, I cannot tell you what will happen. But I can point out some ominous trends.”

9/11 changed the world as we knew it and the Obama presidency has fundamentally transformed America. Orwellian trends which began more than 50 years ago have reached critical mass and We, the People, seem helpless to stop it.

We are at a pivotal point in history where civilization itself seems in jeopardy and what each one of us does (or does not do) will determine the outcome.

As the year 1984 approached, Orwell’s 1984 became in vogue. Interest in Orwellian themes reemerged during the Clinton administration. At that time, I wrote a series of essays which are even more relevant today, given the massive expansion of the federal government and the powers of the Executive Branch under the Obama administration. (One reader recently called them prescient.)

Four Trends to Tyranny

I addressed four cultural and political trends, each of which has been magnified with 1) the advent of astonishing technological advances which have revolutionized life around the globe, 2) the reemergence of belligerent tyrannical and terrorist regimes in hot spots around the globe, and 3) the unbridled assault of political correctness advancing a socialist agenda in America.

Whether we are dealing with the massive growth of terrorism and government, mass immigration and refugee crises, or the war on climate change and on the free market, those trends inevitably lead to tyranny. (If we let them!)

Those four trends are balkanization, globalization, technophilia (progress) and technophobia (regress or primitivism). These trends have been visible for more than half-a-century and they are accelerating at a tremendous pace. Singly, they pose perplexing problems, but combined, they may prove themselves beyond our ability to deal with.

Back in the mid-1990s, Samuel Huntington envisioned a clash between Eight Civilizations; Joel Garreau dissected North America into Nine “Nations.” U.S. News & World Report described Seven Tribes in the United States and also pictured the Two Nations of America. Matthew Connelly and Paul Kennedy prophetically predicted an invasion of the West by the Rest, while Peter Brimelow documented that invasion in Alien Nation. Clearly peace on earth has not become reality.

The world is falling apart, nations are disintegrating, cultures are fragmenting, peoples are torn asunder, and many question whether Humpty Dumpty can ever get a face lift let alone be repaired. The centrifugal forces in society are creating sub-groups within sub-groups, cults within cults, enclaves within enclaves, in a relentless process of fragmentation – all culminating in a drive for a strong hand (e.g., strong centralized government) to bring it all back together again.

American Identity

Over the past three decades, American identity, American values, and American purpose have all undergone enormous transformation. The nature and value of citizenship itself is in peril. Who we are as a People is under attack by usurpers who would redefine our very being. The forces arrayed against Americans are unyielding.

We, like Winston Churchill, must never surrender!

President Obama contends that America is fundamentally flawed[1] and that, under his leadership, she has never been stronger.[2] His evidence refutes his contention.[3]

Fortunately, most Americans still cherish American exceptionalism[4] and reject the values foisted upon our nation and her people.[5]

Now, as we are encircled by a multitude of genuine crises (and distracted by a host of hysterical hoaxes), we must combat the agenda of Obama and the far Left and renew the vision and pursue the dream bequeathed to us by the Founders. Let us reclaim the America that became great because she was good.[6]

Our vision must be clear and our purpose focused. We must not be distracted or confused by Orwellian rhetoric from the Left.[7] To that end this essay series is dedicated.

Please join me in this journey of introspection as this series of essays explores the depths of the dangers facing us in the world, in our nation, and in our local communities. Let us, together, discern what went wrong, identify the enemy forces confronting us, and take action to restore the American Dream.
